Om — The Vibration of Voice
Chanting — Om, mantra, or simple sustained vowels — calms the nervous system through the voice itself, not the words.
How it works
Slow vocalization extends the exhale and vibrates the larynx and chest, stimulating the vagus nerve much like humming; fMRI work on Om chanting shows deactivation of limbic (emotion-alarm) regions. The mantra also gives the wandering mind a single handle to hold.
The practice
Sit tall. Inhale fully; chant a long, low 'Om' for the whole exhale, feeling the vibration move from belly to skull. 5–10 rounds, then sit in the silence that follows — that silence is the practice's payload.
The tradition
Vedic mantra practice
Cautions
- ⚠ Chant at a comfortable pitch — no strain.
