The 4-7-8 & Extended-Exhale Breath

Breath patterns with exhales longer than inhales down-shift arousal in most people who try it and prepare the body for sleep.

How it works

Extended exhalation slows the heart via the baroreflex and vagal activation; counting occupies the mind, interrupting rumination loops.

The practice

Inhale through the nose for 4, hold gently for 7, exhale slowly through the mouth for 8. Four rounds before bed or in moments of acute stress.

The tradition

Modern synthesis of classical retention practice

Cautions

  • ⚠ Skip the hold if pregnant or if holds cause discomfort — the long exhale alone works.
