Nadi Shodhana — Alternate-Nostril Breathing

Slow alternate-nostril breathing calms the nervous system, calms the nervous system and, in small trials, is associated with lower blood-pressure readings and sharper attention within minutes.

How it works

Slow nasal breathing at ~5–6 breaths/minute increases vagal (parasympathetic) tone, generates phase-locked oscillations in emotion-regulating brain regions, and shifts autonomic balance away from fight-or-flight.

The practice

Close the right nostril, inhale left for 4 counts; close left, exhale right for 4; inhale right; exhale left. That is one round. Practice 5–10 rounds, ideally before meditation or during stress.

The tradition

Hatha Yoga Pradipika; classical pranayama

Cautions

  • ⚠ Never force or strain the breath.
  • ⚠ If dizzy, return to normal breathing.
