Abhyanga — Warm-Oil Self-Massage
Daily warm-oil self-massage nourishes skin, calms the nervous system, and doubles as a mindfulness ritual.
How it works
Slow, rhythmic touch activates C-tactile afferents that lower cortisol and heart rate; oil occlusion supports the skin barrier; the ritual itself is embodied mindfulness — the beauty routine as meditation.
The practice
Warm a few tablespoons of sesame or coconut oil. Massage limbs with long strokes, joints in circles, 5–15 minutes before a warm shower. Even 2 minutes on feet before bed helps sleep.
The tradition
Ayurvedic Dinacharya
Cautions
- ⚠ Patch-test oils.
- ⚠ Keep oil away from broken skin.
