Oil Pulling — Oral Ecology
Swishing oil for several minutes reduces oral bacterial load and gingivitis in small trials — a gentle adjunct to (never a replacement for) brushing.
How it works
Oil emulsifies bacterial membranes and mechanically clears the biofilm from surfaces brushing misses; small studies show reductions in S. mutans counts and plaque scores in a few small trials approached the effect of a chlorhexidine rinse, without the staining. Ayurveda frames the mouth as the gate of digestion — morning oral care as preparation for the day's first food.
The practice
On waking, after tongue scraping: swish 1 tbsp coconut or sesame oil for 5–10 minutes (start with 2–3), then spit into the bin — not the sink. Rinse warm, then brush as usual.
The tradition
Ayurvedic Dinacharya (gandusha)
Cautions
- ⚠ Never swallow the oil.
- ⚠ Not a substitute for brushing, flossing, or dental care.
