Binaural Beats — Honest Reading
Two slightly different tones, one per ear, create a perceived 'beat' that may nudge the brain toward relaxed states — a real phenomenon with genuinely mixed evidence.
How it works
The brainstem registers the frequency difference (e.g. 200 Hz left, 206 Hz right → 6 Hz beat) and some EEG studies show modest entrainment toward that rhythm; meta-analyses find small, inconsistent effects on anxiety and attention. What is not in doubt: dedicating 15 quiet minutes to eyes-closed listening helps, whatever the mechanism.
The practice
Headphones required (the effect needs separated ears). 10–20 minutes of a theta-range track — Cheerayu's Sanctuary has one — during the afternoon dip or before sleep.
The tradition
Modern psychoacoustics (Oster, 1973)
Cautions
- ⚠ Skip if prone to seizures unless cleared by a clinician.
- ⚠ Not for use while driving.
