Sleep Architecture — Why Timing Beats Hours
Deep sleep clusters early in the night and REM late; a consistent, early-enough bedtime protects both — which is why sleep regularity predicts health better than duration alone.
How it works
The first two cycles carry most slow-wave (deep) sleep — growth-hormone pulses, glymphatic clearance of the brain's metabolic waste, and physical repair; the last cycles carry most REM — emotional processing and memory. Late bedtimes truncate deep sleep; irregular timing desynchronizes the clock so both suffer. Large cohorts now rank sleep regularity above duration as a mortality predictor.
The practice
Pick a bedtime and keep it within 30 minutes every night, weekends included; anchor mornings with light within an hour of waking; keep the last two hours dim, cool, and screen-light; caffeine ends eight hours before bed. When a choice has to be made, protecting the early night pays most.
The tradition
Ayurveda's dinacharya: sleep by 10 pm, before the pitta hours turn the mind busy
Cautions
- ⚠ Loud snoring, gasping, or unrefreshing sleep despite hours in bed can signal sleep apnea — a clinician can arrange a sleep study.
- ⚠ Persistent insomnia beyond a month deserves assessment; CBT-I is the first-line treatment and works.
