Cortisol — The Rhythm, Not the Villain

Cortisol is meant to peak on waking and fall to a low by night; the problem is a flattened or inverted rhythm — and light, meal timing, movement, and wind-down restore the curve better than any supplement.

How it works

The cortisol awakening response mobilizes energy and alertness; evening decline permits melatonin and deep sleep. Chronic stress, late screens, irregular sleep, and skipped meals flatten the curve, associating with fatigue, poor sleep, abdominal fat, and impaired immunity. Morning light and movement steepen the healthy morning peak; evening dimness, breath, and an early kitchen-close deepen the trough. 'Adrenal fatigue' is not a recognized medical condition; a disrupted cortisol rhythm, however, is real and fixable.

The practice

Light and a walk within an hour of waking; breakfast with protein; a firm screen and food cut-off two hours before bed; a slow-exhale breath practice in the evening; ashwagandha or tulsi as gentle adaptogenic support if you wish, with their cautions.

The tradition

Ayurveda: rise before sunrise, calm by sunset — the dinacharya arc

Cautions

  • ⚠ Persistent exhaustion, salt cravings, dizziness on standing, or unexplained weight change warrant medical testing — real adrenal disorders exist and are diagnosed by a clinician.
  • ⚠ Cortisol-lowering supplements marketed online rarely have evidence — rhythm is the medicine.
