Urolithin A — The Longevity Molecule Your Gut Makes
When you eat pomegranate, walnuts, raspberries, or pecans, certain gut bacteria convert their ellagitannins into urolithin A — a molecule that switches on mitophagy, the recycling of worn-out mitochondria — and randomized human trials of the pure compound report better muscle endurance and lower inflammation markers within months.
How it works
The chain runs food → ellagitannins → ellagic acid → gut bacteria (Gordonibacter, Ellagibacter and relatives) → urolithin A, absorbed and carried to muscle and immune cells, where it triggers PINK1/Parkin mitophagy. The catch is the microbiome: people fall into metabotypes — A (strong producers, roughly four in ten adults), B (partial), and 0 (none) — so the same handful of walnuts makes plenty in one person and nothing in another. Eating the foods regularly raises the producer bacteria over weeks. Trials used pure urolithin A to bypass that lottery: in middle-aged adults, 4 months at 500–1,000 mg/day improved muscle strength ~12%, endurance markers, and lowered C-reactive protein and acylcarnitines (Cell Reports Medicine, 2022); in adults over 65, 4 months at 1,000 mg was safe and improved muscle-endurance and mitochondrial biomarkers, though the six-minute walk did not reach significance (JAMA Network Open, 2022); a 2025 randomized trial reported immune remodeling toward a younger profile (Nature Aging).
The practice
Food first, most days: half a cup of pomegranate arils, a handful of walnuts or pecans, or a cup of raspberries — with the fiber and polyphenols that feed the bacteria which make the molecule. If you want the trial dose regardless of your metabotype, the pure supplement (500–1,000 mg with breakfast, from a house with published human trials and batch testing) adds to a good plate; it never replaces one. Give it three months and let the receipts — endurance, recovery — tell you.
The tradition
Pomegranate (dāḍima) is Ayurveda's tridoshic heart fruit; walnut (akṣoṭa) its classical brain and vitality food — the traditions chose the ellagitannin plants long before anyone named the molecule
Cautions
- ⚠ Every human trial so far was funded by the maker (Amazentis/Timeline) — encouraging, but independent replication is still missing.
- ⚠ Not studied in pregnancy or nursing; long-term data are young.
- ⚠ 'Pomegranate extract' is not urolithin A — it still depends on your gut.
- ⚠ If you take medication, involve your clinician before a daily supplement.
- ⚠ This informs — it does not prescribe. Weigh it and decide.

Practice and Cellular Aging — the Early Signals
Sustained lifestyle practice — yoga, breath, meditation, whole-food diet — is associated with longer telomeres and higher telomerase activity.
Easy Endurance — the Longevity Zone
Regular easy-pace cardio (able to hold a conversation) is one of the strongest predictors of healthspan.
Strength — The Other Half of Longevity
Two short resistance sessions a week independently predict longer life, denser bones, and better metabolic health — and no supplement replaces them.
Shilajit — The Mountain's Mineral Pitch
Purified shilajit resin — centuries of compressed Himalayan plant matter, rich in fulvic acid and a broad trace-mineral profile — is Ayurveda's classical rasayana for vitality, with early trials supporting energy metabolism.
