Intermittent Fasting — The Rhythm of Not Eating
Giving the body a consistent daily fasting window — even a modest one — improves metabolic flexibility and aligns eating with circadian biology. The right window depends on who you are; the wrong one works against you.
How it works
Hours without incoming food let insulin fall, shift fuel use toward stored fat, and trigger cellular housekeeping (autophagy rises as the fast lengthens). Because metabolic machinery follows the body clock, the same calories land better earlier: an eating window that ends well before sleep improves both digestion and sleep depth. Constitution matters — steady kapha types flourish on longer windows, fiery pitta types need regular fuel, and airy vata types are easily depleted by aggressive fasting.
The practice
Start with the gentlest version: finish dinner 3 hours before bed and let the overnight fast reach 12 hours. Extend toward 14–16 hours only if energy, sleep, and mood stay strong. Break the fast gently — warm, easy food. Consistency of the window beats heroics.
The tradition
Ayurvedic langhana (lightening therapy); modern chrononutrition
Cautions
- ⚠ Not appropriate in pregnancy or nursing, with a history of disordered eating, for children, or alongside certain medical conditions and medications — seek professional guidance.
- ⚠ Persistent fatigue, poor sleep, or irritability means the window is too long for you.
