Collagen — How Skin Keeps Its Structure
Skin collagen declines about 1% a year from the mid-twenties; sleep, sun protection, vitamin C, protein, and not smoking protect it — and topical retinoids and oral collagen peptides have supporting evidence.
How it works
Fibroblasts synthesize type I and III collagen using vitamin C, glycine, proline, and iron as cofactors; UV, sugar (glycation cross-links), smoking, and cortisol degrade it. Retinoids upregulate collagen synthesis in the dermis with decades of trial evidence; oral collagen peptides show modest but consistent improvements in elasticity and hydration over 8–12 weeks.
The practice
Sun protection daily; vitamin-C-rich food (amla, citrus, peppers) and adequate protein; sleep — collagen synthesis peaks in early deep sleep; if using actives, a retinoid a few nights a week with barrier care; collagen peptides are a reasonable optional layer, marine or grass-fed, third-party tested.
The tradition
Ayurveda's rasayana foods — amla and ghee — for tissue nourishment (dhatu)
Cautions
- ⚠ Retinoids are avoided in pregnancy and cause initial irritation — introduce slowly.
- ⚠ Collagen supplements are a food protein — vegans build collagen from the cofactor nutrients instead.

Practice and Cellular Aging — the Early Signals
Sustained lifestyle practice — yoga, breath, meditation, whole-food diet — is associated with longer telomeres and higher telomerase activity.
The Gut–Skin–Brain Axis
Skin conditions and mood often trace back to gut health; feed the gut and the face follows.
Sugar Ages Skin — Glycation
Chronically elevated blood sugar stiffens and wrinkles skin by cross-linking collagen.
Skin Repairs on a Schedule
Skin cell regeneration peaks during consistent, early nighttime sleep — beauty sleep is measurable biology.
